Today we stopped by this lovely little café for my husband’s birthday breakfast, and everything was just right for us. The atmosphere was relaxed and low-key. We had a great time and left more than full. What more could you ask for? Thanks to the whole team.

Honestly, I’ve never—anywhere—experienced a boss this unfriendly. We went to this café today for a birthday. For starters, everything is really small—there are lots of people crammed into a very tight space—so I didn’t even bring my kids with me. Parking there on a Sunday is basically hopeless. But okay—we knew that, because we’d been there a few years ago. The prices are extremely high. Pancakes are served dry, and even a splash of maple syrup is supposed to cost almost €4!!! We had a hot cocoa with coconut and mint in a tiny glass for €5 and a matcha that was honestly not worth the money either. Now for the part that really leaves me speechless: I recently had stomach surgery, so I can’t really eat large amounts right now. I asked if I could get the kids’ menu (a bread roll with Nutella—for €6.50). The server said she’d have to ask the manager. Fine, so far. Then the “nice lady” came over and explained that it’s basically meant only for children, but she’d allow it today—loudly, so everyone could look. Instead of leaving it at that, she started ranting (again, loudly): things like this wouldn’t work because if everyone did it they’d be bankrupt soon; she has to pay the people, so it’s not worth baking just one roll. And then, in the most cheeky way: “I’d be taking up someone else’s place?” Like what place? “I mean, we were three. My companions ordered normally.” Then she went on about how people would look at us like we’re stupid if we didn’t “understand.” We hadn’t said anything at all. But after she repeated herself five times about why it “doesn’t work,” I guess the only thing I could do was stare “like an idiot”—because I truly thought I was in the wrong movie. I don’t know any other restaurant/café where they require a minimum spend, do they? So I said, then I’ll just eat nothing and only have something to drink—because I can’t eat more anyway because of my stomach. And now comes the absolute icing on the cake: She says it to everyone, dead serious, in this sarcastic tone that was just beyond unacceptable: “Nutella rolls are of course great with stomach problems. WELL. And roll your eyes.” I mean, what exactly was her problem?! Sorry, but that kind of treatment of customers is completely unacceptable. So we left without eating and went to another café, where the small portion for me wasn’t an issue at all—and where we were treated with appreciation and kindness. Bottom line: I’m going to advise my friends and acquaintances not to go to this café!

Hi Sarah, I’m really sorry that you had such an experience with us. There are a few things I still need to clarify: You’d already visited us several times before, and it even seems you decided to celebrate your birthday with us. That’s why your review honestly surprised me in some points—because neither our space, our concept, nor our prices are new. Our restaurant is small and usually quite busy—that’s always been the case, and it’s something many of our regulars particularly appreciate about Fräulein Wunder. The personal atmosphere, the closeness, and the energy are part of Fräulein Wunder for years. We’re not a café. We’re a breakfast restaurant with four opening days per week and an extensive, very special menu—most of which we make ourselves. Bread and rolls, pancakes, rösti, spreads, and many other components are created by hand with us every day. It’s exactly this combination of craftsmanship, quality, and variety that has made Fräulein Wunder what it is for years. You’d asked about stomach problems because of a single scone with Nutella (€3). Of course, we would have found a solution for that—and we did promise that. I just wanted to explain why we can’t offer it as a standard option in general. Even though breakfast is what we do most, we’re not the typical café with ready-made products and a continuous snack offering. We’re a breakfast restaurant with a more involved production process and a concept built on craftsmanship, freshness, and a lot of hands-on work. That’s why we can’t accommodate requests like that as a general rule—even though in individual cases we always try to find a good solution together. I’m sorry that this explanation came across to you as either criticism or justification. What I can’t let stand, though, is the suggestion that I deliberately wanted to embarrass you or criticize you loudly in front of other guests. Or roll my eyes… That doesn’t match my understanding of myself, or how guests and my team have experienced me for many years. Apparently we perceived the situation very differently, and I genuinely regret that. You also wrote that you could only eat small portions because of a stomach operation. We didn’t have that information at the time. And that you were celebrating a birthday that day—we didn’t know either; we only found out through your review. Calling me “the rudest boss you’ve ever had” makes me honestly sad—especially because it describes me as a person, not just one single moment or situation. If someone knows me, or has visited us more than once, they’ll know how important it is to me to treat people with respect and warmth—toward guests as well as toward employees. I think too much rather than too little. That’s exactly why this not only general, but also very blunt statement hurts so much. Maybe I explained too much in that moment because it mattered to me that you could understand our situation and the background behind it. It was meant well, but apparently it landed very badly. But knowingly singling someone out or treating them disrespectfully is not in line with my personality or the values Fräulein Wunder has stood for for many years. Still, I wish you all the best. Linda

All in all, a great breakfast! I really appreciate how thoughtfully you’ve taken my food intolerances into account.

Nice, calm café with a pleasant atmosphere and very friendly staff. You generally feel comfortable there. Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to expectations in terms of both price and flavor. We ordered a breakfast bagel (not vegan), and it was pretty plain and carelessly arranged. The taste also came across as rather bland. The presentation of the other dishes felt similarly lacking in attention to detail. For just under €14.90 per bagel, we don’t think the price is justified. The drinks are fine in terms of quality, but they’re priced quite high. A bio tea for €3.60 per cup is still okay, but the teapot for €8.90 seems clearly overpriced. Bottom line: Nice ambience and good service, but the value for money isn’t there for either the food or the drinks. Overall, it’s too expensive for what you get.
