Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is one of the leading companies in Nigeria and offers comprehensive services in the areas of planning, design, engineering, construction, operation and maintenance of buildings, infrastructure and industrial projects. To manage and maintain its nationwide fleet of vehicles more efficiently, pep.digital was commissioned to develop an IoT-based fleet management solution in 2022.
The solution is based on two central components: Vehicle equipment: All vehicles were equipped with data transmitters that record operating data and transmit it via the mobile phone network. Scope of the software solution
The solution is divided into three main areas: Monitoring and analysis: real-time monitoring of vehicle usage and analysis of operational data. Alarms and events: Automatic notification of rule violations and flagging of specific events such as refueling or data loss. Reporting: Creation of detailed reports showing differences in consumption, usage and operating time across different job sites.
Collaboration and project approach
Development took place in an 18-month agile project with 14-day iterations. At the beginning, a minimum viable product (MVP) was defined, which represented the first productive version. This MVP went live after a few months and was continuously expanded as the project progressed. The collaboration between the client and pep.digital was characterized by regular feedback loops and coordination, which enabled continuous prioritization and review of the development results.
Division of labour
The client initially described the requirements and challenges at a rough level. Based on this information, pep.digital developed solution concepts and presented them in the form of descriptions and wireframes. After agreeing these concepts, pep.digital's proxy product owner (PO) formulated detailed user stories, which were then implemented by the development team. Quality assurance included automated system tests as well as manual tests of new functions by the proxy PO and the customer PO.
Technology used
The technical basis of the solution consists of a modern and scalable technology stack that ensures that the solution works efficiently and reliably. Frontend: The user interface was developed as a web application with Angular, which enables intuitive and high-performance interaction. Backend: Java Spring Boot is used to process the business applications, providing robust and maintainable services. Database: A relational database ensures reliable storage and efficient management of the extensive vehicle data. Messaging: RabbitMQ was integrated to enable reliable and asynchronous processing of events and to optimize communication between system components. IAM: Keycloak was used as an Identity and Access Management (IAM) provider to ensure secure and flexible user management. Deployment: The entire solution is deployed using Docker, which ensures easy scalability and consistent environments for development, testing and production. This technology stack was chosen to meet the current requirements of the project as well as to enable future enhancements and optimizations.
The introduction of the software solution brought significant improvements: Transparency: detailed insights into vehicle usage enabled improved control. Efficiency: The rapid identification and rectification of inappropriate use significantly reduced operating costs. Optimization: Reports supported strategic planning and targeted efficiency improvements.
