A great surprise. A little gem in the heart of Rome—right where, these days, the “grab-and-go” tourist business seems to run the show. Here’s this gallery: understated and spotless, with a bright, spacious main room and a back area with a small bar—limited selection, but the prices are fair. Honestly, it’s almost unbelievable, at this point, especially in Trastevere. I was here for the final presentation evening of the winning works from a contest run by the Altamira association. The pieces on display were excellent—everything from photography and painting to sculpture and video, etc.—and the opening concert was something else: Monochrome: the city. Most people probably won’t know them (after all, we are still in Italy), but the emotional impact was incredible. I’m Roman, and I’ll admit I’m a bit tired of this city. Still, you have to acknowledge that some real gems can still be found here. It’s a shame they often don’t get the attention they deserve. Highly recommended. The place even features names like Lucamaleonte. Look up the Altamira association for some truly interesting stuff, and go listen to Monochrome: the city on YouTube. P.S. Among the contest winners was Martino Wildt—an excellent photographer, and definitely not unknown in the Roman art scene.
