As I’ve been reading through the feedback so far, I’ve noticed that criticism of school Wi-Fi is very prevalent. As a teacher, I’d like to offer a perspective on this that’s often overlooked in the debate: What realistic expectations can we have of a wireless network infrastructure of this scale? It’s worth taking a look at the technical context, which we should ideally also cover in computer science classes: For example, if a school has a gigabit connection (1,000 Mbit/s) and 500 students are accessing the network at the same time, on average—purely mathematically—that leaves about 2 Mbit/s per device. It’s obvious that such bandwidth isn’t comparable to the performance typically expected from a home internet connection, where often only a few devices use the full bandwidth. In my view, a basic understanding of such distribution mechanisms and the limitations of digital infrastructure is an integral part of modern media literacy—both among students and in professional discourse. It would therefore be desirable for us to conduct the debate in a less emotional manner and instead assess the technical realities realistically.

A subpar system that’s not really usable. The Wi‑Fi works less reliably than the trains of Deutsche Bahn. Definitely not recommended for schools.
