Commodity Intelligence: Volatility and Market Regimes for Soft Commodities
Case Study by myBytes GmbH
Description
Ongoing in-house research program on agricultural commodities (coffee, cocoa, sugar): when do markets change their behavior, and how well can we predict risk and volatility? Results are published as research articles on mybytes.com, each with a companion repository.
Challenge
Raw material prices swing between calm and turbulent phases. If you’re planning purchasing or hedging, you don’t need a point forecast—you need an honest picture of uncertainty, and models that perform in backtests rather than just looking good in hindsight.
Solution
Start with a transparent baseline: GARCH volatility models with a reproducible backtest design as the benchmark—then build on that with hidden Markov models to detect market regimes. Each stage is compared against the simpler one, and the code is fully open.
Results
A documented, reproducible model pipeline from the baseline to regime detection, published as a series of articles with open-source repositories. The methodology forms the foundation of our forecasting consulting for demand and pricing data in the mid-market.

Team
myBytes keeps it intentionally small: when someone reaches out, they speak directly with one of your two founders. Guido Winger comes from e-commerce. He co-founded the open-source shop software xt:Commerce and led the company as CEO until 2010. Today, he focuses on data science, forecasting, recommendation systems, pattern recognition, prediction, and deep learning. Mariusz Pianowski has been building production systems for more than twenty years, including at mobile.de, Motoso, and Alphaonline. His strengths are data architectures, system integration, and customer analytics—the bridge between grown-up, established IT and a model that works in everyday operations, delivering business-relevant, decision-ready, and understandable data. Together, they built extensive training in AI at various well-known academies, earning certificates from MIT Professional Education’s “Applied AI and Data Science Professional” program and as Deep Learning Specialists from the Bitkom Academy. We publish our work as case studies with open code, which you can read at https://mybytes.com.
