A year ago, I bought a car. The price was a bit on the high side, but it was a nice car. There seemed to be some marten damage under the hood, but I wasn’t allowed to have it checked by a third party. My trade-in had a knock in the engine and, according to them, was therefore worth nothing anymore—they said it could only be exported. And now, if you look up the license plate, it’s been registered again—just like that—with a private individual. I’m happy with the car I bought. I haven’t had anyone look at it, and it still drives great, but I’m not okay with lies like this, and this kind of thing is not something I’ll forgive. They’ll never see me again. Edit: I hope the edit below the response from Lonkhuizen doesn’t get removed, but I need to address it anyway. They say that having it checked by a third party is always allowed, but their exact words were: “we’re not going to get into that because another garage will always find something.” They also wash their hands of what the next party does with the car, even though they themselves said that that party indicated they were going to export the car—so that’s why they could only offer €1,000 trade-in value. That other party’s statement was made based on Lonkhuizen’s analysis of the car. You’d expect Lonkhuizen to know enough about cars to say whether that assessment is realistic. I lowered the rating to 1 star because they responded very quickly to this review and they’re still standing their ground.

What a shame that you’re accusing us of lying and doing it anonymously. We don’t recognize ourselves in this story. We’re always open to third-party inspections. We probably sold your car on to another auto business. What happened to it after that, we don’t know—and we’re not responsible for. We sold you a good car, and as you write yourself, you were satisfied with it. So we really don’t understand why, a year later, we’re getting a 2-star review here.

Came back to take a second look at a car. Again, the seller didn’t speak to me very nicely. Not much enthusiasm about selling a car. Thankfully, we didn’t buy a car here!

First, you need to negotiate (i.e., state) whether you’re willing to pay the price they’re asking for the car before you’re allowed to take it for a test drive. Without having assessed or driven the car, I don’t know whether I want to pay that amount or whether it’s actually worth it (I do have the money on me, of course—otherwise I wouldn’t even come by). On top of that, they’ll also offer only a minimum price for the trade-in car. Right when you’re about to leave, they can suddenly offer 500 euros more—how convenient. It’s a shame. I went because this dealership has positive reviews on Google, but apparently that’s exaggerated.

It’s disappointing that you gave us a 1-star rating. We had a price difference of €2,250 with your trade-in vehicle, and you indicated that the car was outside your budget. So there’s no real reason for us to go ahead and let you test-drive it. All of our cars are nicely cleaned and ready in the showroom, and that’s why we keep the test drive as the last step in the sales process. As a taxi company, you probably wouldn’t take passengers on trips that are outside budget either.
Great no-nonsense company. No hypey sales talk. The deal was closed quickly. Hopefully we’ll have lots of fun with our car.
