Description

Kaboodle (a DIY and trade-friendly kitchen cabinetry brand sold through Bunnings Warehouse) partnered with Viewport XR to create a digital, in-store retail solution. Viewport XR built a hybrid 42-inch touch screen and Virtual Reality (VR) kiosk powered by Unity. This system allows everyday shoppers and trade professionals to design, configure, and visualize a complete kitchen layout with real-time accuracy directly from the store aisle.

Solution

Viewport XR tackled the challenge by splitting the project into a comprehensive material capture pipeline and a robust hardware rollout:

Large-Scale Material Capture Pipeline: Viewport XR took hundreds of physical product samples from Kaboodle and built 4K and 8K texture sets. They mapped roughness, reflectivity, opacity, and wood grains to eliminate visible seams. This created a centralized, universal digital material library that matched the real-life gloss and finishes perfectly.

The Interactive Kitchen Configurator: They built a bespoke real-time kitchen configurator using Unity. Users can select common layouts and tap to swap cabinets, benchtop thicknesses, flooring, and hardware with touch gestures. CRM and Backend Integration: At the end of a design session, users can input their email address to receive a tailored HTML summary complete with high-resolution screenshots of their exact kitchen configuration. This effectively captures qualified customer leads for Kaboodle and Bunnings.

Retail-Ready Hardware Deployment: Viewport XR handled the physical procurement and deployment of the kiosks in Bunnings stores. Each custom-built kiosk features a 42-inch commercial-grade touch screen, custom branding, and a specialized internal PC housing an NVIDIA RTX-class GPU to support heavy real-time 3D rendering. The platform is built dynamically, allowing it to seamlessly scale into the New Zealand market under a rebranded trade UI while keeping the central asset pipeline.

Results

Following the deployment of the digital kiosks across Bunnings stores, the project yielded significant measurable outcomes for shoppers, store staff, and the Kaboodle brand:

Increased Purchase Confidence: Shifting from static brochure photos and loose material samples to a full-scale digital model drastically reduced buyer hesitation. Shoppers stopped drifting between aisles and could instantly see their design in context, speeding up the decision-making process for high-stakes kitchen renovations.

Streamlined In-Store Consultations: Bunnings kitchen consultants and trade partners reported a shift in customer interactions. Instead of spending time answering basic questions about available ranges, staff could immediately transition to finalizing orders using layouts and color schemes pre-saved by the customer.

Data-Driven Business Insights: The CRM backend generated a steady stream of structured data for Kaboodle regarding the exact styles, finishes, and configurations customers selected most. This operational data directly informs their ongoing product development, marketing highlights, and future kiosk placement strategies.

Scalable Multi-Market Expansion: The initial six-store trial in Australia successfully validated the model, leading to an expansion of more than 20 locations across Australia. Because Viewport XR built a centralized digital material library, the platform seamlessly scaled into the New Zealand market under the "Connected Spaces" trade brand with updated UI styling—all without needing to rebuild the core software from scratch.
