When Alkmaar was besieged by Spanish troops in September 1573, the people of Alkmaar decided not to surrender without a fight. The residents worked together to strengthen the city’s defenses—and Trijn, at just 16 years old, was right there in the front line. She didn’t just help raise the city walls; she’s also said to have joined other women in attacking the enemy with boiling water and tar when the Spaniards tried to break into the city. Trijn Rembrands has grown into an important symbol of civic courage. She represents the many women—often unnamed—who played a role in defending their city and their freedom. Trijn stands there, proud and resolute. One hand is on her hip, and from the other, a silvery dove of peace takes flight. The right side of the sculpture shows 16th-century Trijn in period clothing, made of stainless steel. The left side and her head depict modern Trijn, made of cast bronze. So it’s two Trijns in one. She stands with her historical side on the rubble of the Red Tower and with her modern side on peaceful grass. The pedestal is carved from the Italian stone Pietra Serena.
