As a local shop owner here in Göttingen, it’s genuinely close to my heart to support small businesses from the area. That’s exactly why I wanted to try Tomi’s Delicatessen. The concept—Japanese food, creative finger food, and a modern snack bar—is actually a really great idea and a welcome addition to the city. Unfortunately, my visit was overshadowed by an unpleasant interpersonal incident. The cook/server was extremely unfriendly to me. The reason goes back to an earlier encounter: she wanted to book a service or a course with me, but it didn’t work out because of a significant language barrier—her German was unfortunately still very rudimentary. When we offered to hold the course in English instead, she refused, and she left the situation angry even back then. She has now carried that negative experience straight over into her own store. When she recognized me, she reacted right away in a dismissive manner and told us directly that we should go eat somewhere else. I think it’s really unfortunate when private reactions caused by language barriers and misunderstandings end up affecting a professional restaurant business. I do believe everyone deserves a second chance—but after this incident and her direct request that we leave, I’m sure of one thing: I won’t be eating here again. And the other reviews that criticize the staff’s rudeness unfortunately match my experience completely. It’s a shame, because the concept is actually quite nice.
